LOCATION:
HYBRID MEETING - Country Club of York & Virtual Meeting on Zoom
PROGRAM:
Everyone needs a hobby heading into retirement and our presenter "dug in" going back to college to earn a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology and a Master's focused on Ancient Greece. Our speaker will be Joe Wagman, former Rotarian and Chairman of Wagman Construction. Joe has titled his talk "in search of Achillies". Starting with an Art History class in college in his early 20's, and a couple of dig participations during his college years, Joe developed and active interest in Archaeology. Anticipating retirement forty years later, he took classes on a part-time basis at Dickinson College and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology in 2016. In 2021 he completed a Master's program at the University of Pennsylvania, focused on the Mycenaean Civilization (ancient Greece).
Each summer in recent (non-Covid) years he has spent 2-3 weeks on digs in Greece. Joe will discuss the results of his most recent dig, that took place in June of 2022. The goal of that dig was to investigate the possibility that a first order Mycenean citadel, linked by Homer to Achilles, existed on the Akrolamia (hilltop) of Lamia, Greece. Come hear Joe's fascinating journey of transitions towards retirement and following your passions as time becomes more your own.
