The Future of U.S. - China Relations: How to Move Forward Without Getting Along by Scott Moore.  This talk presents some new ideas for how to make progress on these shared global challenges despite deep and growing differences between China, the United States, and other countries.

The relationship between China and the United States is the most important one in the world, playing a crucial role in preserving the peace as well as trillions of dollars in trade and investment. And while the two countries have always had differences, rarely have they been sharper, as the United States investigates claims that China concealed evidence on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic and struggles to deal with a regime it has said is perpetrating an ongoing genocide in Xinjiang. At the same time the world faces increasingly severe ecological and technological challenges, especially climate change and artificial intelligence, that will be impossible to address without working with China.

Scott Moore, Director of China Programs and Strategic Initiatives and Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, teaches courses on Chinese politics. An expert on China, the environment, and technology, Scott previously served as Environment, Science, Technology, and Health Officer at the U.S. Department of State during the Obama Administration and then at the World Bank.

His new book, Rethinking China's Rise: New Ways to Compete and Cooperate on the Environment, Technology, and Beyond, which will be published by Oxford University Press in 2022, looks at how to make progress on issues like climate change, artificial intelligence, and other shared challenges despite deep and growing differences between China and other countries.
