Youth Leadership Committee
The Student of the Month Awards have been announced for York Country Day School, Northeastern High School, York Suburban High School and William Penn High School. Rotary embers enjoyed having the students at the meeting to receive their awards, while their guests and counselors watched. In addition, it was great to learn about the students' involvement in their schools and in their communities. We took a hiatus during the holiday season, and will begin the Monthly Awards in January honoring two students from the York County School of Technology. A tentative schedule has been set for January-June 2011.
Soon, we will begin planning for HOBY and RYLA.
Service Above Self Committee
will be presenting about six awards this year. Since 1997 the committee has made awards to 35 community leaders who exemplify service above self.
Literacy Committee
Rotary International designates March of each year as Literacy Month and encourages local clubs to highlight literacy through club activities. On March 16, 2011, Tom Russell will be our featured speaker. Tom’s topic will be “Financial Literacy – learning to live within our means.” During this short presentation, Tom will explore the challenge and what we are doing in our community to address the issue including the work of the Financial Literacy Partnership and the Financial Stabilization Partnership and how they are providing solutions. In addition, each week a member of the Literacy Committee will be presenting a brief literacy moment on a functional literacy skill, such as health literacy, literacy challenges for the deaf, vocational literacy and parenting literacy.
Membership Committee
is planning, doing, or has done various meetings and strategizing sessions to continue to find new members for our great Club. We encourage current members to propose friends, family, business acquaintances, or co-workerswho might make good members of our Club. Remember that we have a fourth criteria, community service, under which someone might qualify even if they don't meet our other "business" criteria.

Preserve Planet Earth Committee
Current projects:
1. Ongoing maintenance of a section of the York County Rail Trail from Grantley Road to approximately 250 feet west of South Richland Avenue. Since the inception of the project about ten years ago, this part of the trail has been transformed from a ugly area contaminated from years of heavy railroad use to an attractive area with grass, seasonal flowers, shrubs, trees and wild native vegetation.
2. Continuation of our initiative to reestablish the tree canopy in York City to restore shade, beauty and to provide other environmental benefits. Funded by our club, state grants, contributions from community leaders, and donations from our community, approximately 100 unsightly trees have been removed and replaced.
3. Participation in the York City-side litter pick up days - the most recent being this past October 16th.
4. Annually in addition to providing partial funding, members of the committee assist with the York County Envirothon. This is an annual program for York County Students from third through twelfth grades and attracts approximately 600 students. The goal of this program is to provide students with the tools they need to become responsible stewards of York County's agricultural and natural ecosystems.
Currently under study is the adoption and cleanup of three of the 15 designated dump sites in the City of York. This project in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Clean Ways and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is designed to remove the blight of litter which also attracts rodents. Adopted sites would be cleaned up, monitored and maintained free of trash to prevent them from returning to their prior unsightly condition.
Also under consideration is a cooperative project with the York County Audubon Society to repair the accidental damage to the plantings along Willis Run in the City of York. This bird sanctuary is in need of restoration due to an accidental poisoning of a substantial amount of the vegetation upon which a large variety of birds are dependent.
