This Week: Wednesday, July 7, 2010
Place: The Yorktowne Hotel
Program: When the Boy Scouts of America was officially incorporated on February 8, 1910, Americans were driving Stanley steam automobiles, earning an average of $750 a year and paying little more than 30 cents for a gallon of milk. While all these things seem out of place today, the BSA remains a vital organization with a mission and a purpose that is more relevant than ever. Throughout 2010, the Boy Scouts of America is celebrating its 100th anniversary, paying tribute to the rich history and tradition of Scouting. With more than 100 million members since its founding, the BSA has made a lasting and positive imprint on the fabric of the nation. This year has also produced a watershed event for Scouting in our community, with the merger of the York-Adams Area Council and the neighboring Keystone Area Council that took place on April 1. The new council, known for now as the Keystone York-Adams Council, is the fourth-largest council in Pennsylvania (behind only Pittsburgh, Phila-delphia and Allentown) with nearly 12,000 registered Scouts in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Perry and York Counties at the close of 2009. Today’s program will provide an interesting look back on the BSA’s first 100 years, but also will examine the BSA’s current impact in the York community, as well as the anticipated benefits that this newly-merged council should create for Scouting in south-central PA. (Rotarian) Ron Gardner, Scout Executive and CEO of the Keystone York-Adams Council, will present the program. Ron had previously been serving as Scout Executive of the York-Adams Area Council since 1997 before he was selected to provide professional leadership for the new council.
